"We cant be sure that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. Some intelligence in other countries say no. Americans intelligence is divided. I cannot vote to turn over constitutional authority to any chief executive. I will not vote to take powers out of the hand of Congress. Our forefathers would not have intended this."

"[The Ku Klux Klan] is an effective force in the struggle against communism and in the promotion of traditional American values."
--Robert C. Byrd, speaking as a "Klegal" [recruiter] for the Klan, 1942
"I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side"
--Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944
"Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds"
-- Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1945
"The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia and in every state in the Union."
-- State Rep. Robert C. Byrd, letter to the West Virginia KKK Grand Wizard, 1948
"Otherwise, one would hope for maintaining party unity and get the support of the South’s Democrats for ‘killing the bill’"
-- Congressman Robert C. Byrd, on Eisenhower's Civil Rights Act, Sept. 9 1957
"I intend to filibuster the bill that is to be labeled the so-called '1964 Civil Rights Act'. I have searched the scriptures in vain for its justification. I have found none. Segregation of the races is a way of life, and I intend to keep it that way."
--Senator Robert C. Byrd, to Democratic caucus, April 29, 1964
"There will never be a Negro on the US Supreme Court, I can guarantee you that. Mr. Marshall holds views with our dangerous to this nation and our posterity. I know a group of Senators, who, like myself...will hold up his confirmation vote for months if we have to."
--Senator Robert C. Byrd, June 1967
"I don't hate anybody... [but] there are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time; I'm going to use that word."
--Senator Robert C. Byrd in a Fox News Interview, March 4, 2001

Just because someone is a racist does not make them unable to see the reality of other causes and agenda's.
But I will grant you the Sen byrd is not someone I give much substance to. He falls under the realm of wacko. That doesn't meen he is wrong all the time.

what is the context of this quote. when i know for a fact of how it is meant then i'll pass judgement.
i don't care if he is a racist. as long as he does not try to pass laws that are racist, harm someone because of race, etc.. he stands up to bush and his cronies.
i do hate his pork barrel sucking pig tactics, building too many highways here. the more i look at byrd the more i don't like him at all. but so far there aren't a whole lot of choices to pick from.

Dear Brooks,
You have more quotes than Carder has liverpills. Mr. Byrd gave up that long ago, just like senator Strom Thurmond did.
Right now, Mr. Byrd is on the track of a bunch of corrupt corporate theorists who are winning the battle of destroying the US Constitution. Mr. Byrd always gets his man, even at his late stages in life. Mr. Byrd is a national hero. Mr. Byrd smells a rat in the Rose Garden and that is all there is to it.
