Woman sues over N.C. anti-cohabitation law (http://209.157.64.200/focus/f-news/1373505/posts)
WILMINGTON, N.C. - A former sheriff's dispatcher who quit her job after her boss found out she lived with her boyfriend is challenging North Carolina's law against cohabitation.
Debora Hobbs said she was told to get married, move out, or find another job after her boss found out about her living situation. The legal arm of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina filed the lawsuit Monday on her behalf.
The lawsuit seeks to abolish the nearly 200-year-old - and rarely enforced - law that prohibits unmarried, unrelated adults of the opposite sex from living together. North Carolina is one of seven states with such a law.
Convicted offenders face a fine and up to 60 days in jail.

Glad to see that N.C. is cracking down on the evil co-habitators. I wonder how many real criminals they are ignoring in an effort to bring these vicious sexual devients to justice.

This would be laughable if it weren't so sad. In fact at first when I read it I thought it was a joke...
Not so funny for her though.
Is her boss this archaic or was this the best thing he could dredge up to fire an unwanted employee? Just speculating. Getting rid of someone on the job, who is totally incompetent is damn near impossible from a legal perspective unless one is willing to reach deep into the coffers.

it is nealry impossible to fire someone from a government job, they literally have to commit a crime to get fired, tahts no joke. she was probably an incompetant boob who was bulletproof from firing until her boss found this law and saw a way out.
You have some great archaic laws in the uk. Things such as "you can kill a welshman with a bow-and-arrow within the walls of the city of Chester on a Sunday" (I may not have got that exactly right).

LOL, there are a million crazy old laws here as well. Stuff like "its illegal to sleep on your back inside the city limits" and completly insane things like that.

I agree Echo it's nice to know where the tax dollars are going. Maybe next week they could chase after a 1 year old for crapping in public I can stand being next to one of those smelly little turd shooters :D

Good day to all, I just joined today!!
The ACLU may very well be successful. Under the legal principle of
Desuetude, laws that are outdated/outmoded/unenforced for many years have impliedly repealed themselves.
Also if her attorney, court appointed or not is good, he/she can get the charge dismissed.

He obviously is a boss that rules the workplace with an "Iron fist", his way or the highway. Obvioulsy she was not Union/under contract, so being employed at will they can drop her for anything, as long as it is not prohibited by law. How was her relationship status affecting her work? It was'nt, and he knew it.

First of all Rick welcome to the craziness of Allforums!
As for her boss, yeah an iron fist and a very archaic attitude or sly like a fox.
