supreme court justices should run for the office just like everyone else for such a high priced job. getting picked for the job for LIFE is absolutely insane.

I think the filibuster goes against the Constitutional directive of a majority vote for nominees. Regardless, if the Republicans do away with it they damn well better not whine about not having it when they're the minority party.

Then we have judges making crazy rulings because they're up for reelection. No thanks.

I agree.

The funny thing is that the Dem's reduced the # required for cloture(sp?) from 67 to 60 in 1975. Now you would think that any change is sacreligious................LOL

actually they tried to get rid of the filibuster in '95.

But what do you expect, being a hypocrite is a requirement to serve in government. The other is being a believable liar.

I think the fillabuster is something that any minority party should use in order to keep the majority party in check.

The Founding Fathers wanted ways for the party in the minority to be able to somehow check the majority. This is one of the ways the minority party keeps the majority party in check.

The Republicans have used this before, and now the Democrats are using it.

If any party should fillabuster, it should be with a decision as big as this. This is for life justices.

But of course the Republicans don't want the fillabuster, because now that they are in the majority they want to keep all power. Sadly, they don't see that someday they will want the fillabuster when they are in the minority again. And that we have this option in for a reason, so one party does not go crazy with power.

It seems to me that the filibuster is a time honored tradition that should be kept in place.

That said, what is there that prevents any majority party from enacting legislation such as this, and then putting the rules back to whatever it was earlier, when the next election takes their majority away?

The filibuster is part of the checks and balances system that keeps us actually having a fair democracy as we know it. These are indeed dangerous times. If anyone has a link to an online petition to keep the filibuster rule...please post it here.
