Yesterday, I saw a news program who reported a poll that said about 90% of people polled believe human reproductive cloning
to be morally wrong. I believe it is wrong because it is a form of
inbreeding as far as I am concerned. What about you?

Four choices are given. I see no logical basis for any of them. Why not try approaching the topic from the perspective of why it is the right thing to do?

In what way did those polled indicate that cloning was morally wrong?

Finally, from where do you get the idea that in-breeding will eventually lead to the extinction of the species?

And what of the option "It is not morally wrong, imo"?

In my opinion, cloning may be an ethical problem, but only insofar as that term (ethical) is applied to accepted social practices above and byeond any moral consideration. I don't believe that the cloning of human beings is submittable to any known system of morals.

I couldn't answer using the poll. Cloning - it's hard to have much of an opinion. An identical twin is almost a clone. I guess it comes down to the whole concept of are we more than just flesh and blood. If the clone was a perfectly normal being with it's own thoughts, opinions, desires & emotions - then it questions a lot of religious belief - I think this is why the "church" is against it.

I don't see us making clones and then harvesting their bodies for spare parts - especially if these clones are new individuals. So, beyond that - what is the point of it?

The one worry I would have is that once we unleash that sort of messing with nature then I fear there will be some consequence that we don't like - just based along the lines that it's a sum zero game.

Drew,

Messing around with nature always has consequences. Some of them are not pretty, especially if certifiable cranks are doing the messing around.

Oh I agree there will be consequences, the worry is what will they be.

Remember we are already messing around with nature big time with genetic engineered plants & crops - they say they do testing and its all ok - but there is no way anybody can know what the consequencies are

All seems like rolling the dice of humanity just to make 4th quarter earnings.

Cloning will be the same.

And yep - agreed, certified cranks is about right
