Now, I think it's sad when anyone has to die. Although, the Pope did have many ideas and thoughts that I did not agree with. But, again...he is dead and out of respect for him I won't go into the issues I had with him.
May he rest in peace.

It is sad indeed, but it had to happen sometime. As for the stuff we disagree with him about, well, the Catholic church will be the Catholic church and it's a lot more liberal than it used to be. He did a lot of admirable things, though, like forgving the guy who tried to kill him. I wonder who they'll choose as his successor.

Rest in peace.
He did have an impact in the world - but personally I find it hard to lift him up to such lofty heights. He had a billion followers hanging on his word - all he had to do is say something and people took notice. Having said that, there is lots he chose not to say and do. So, the good he did - didn't take much effort. He was no mother theresa living with the poor & needy. He lived in complete luxury.
There's also many things he did and said that really made his 'comments that had impact' - simply look like luck rather than deep insight.
This guy outright condemed the 1991 desert storm war.
He will be remembered the most for his support of freedom in the world.

Sarcasm? What?! He has! You think I'm making it up? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_John_Paul_I

I know who John Paul the 1st is. That's what makes it sarcasm. You knew as well as I, he wasnt referring to the former pontiff. This isn't the place to waste time with correcting people.

It's not sarcasm! I'm pointing out that people tend to be very unspecific, linguistically. It's two letters: "II". Yes, I knew who everyone was talking about, but my point is that the man's name was not "Pope John Paul", it was "Pope John Paul II".
Incidentally, can anyone tell me why popes change their names when they become popes? That's always puzzled me.

Papal names began in the 18th century when Pope Mein Thaeye was elected. BTW this was the first recorded incident of anyone wearing glasses with non-prescription lenses.
Seriously, I believe that papal names are used to honor a previous Pope, to "send a message" of where the new Pope will lead the church, or just a reference to a certian apostle or high saint that embodies the elected Pope's ideal's.

That would be interesting. I also think that a female pope would be interesting.
I wonder when the KKK will start denouncing Catholics?

Not being a Roman Catholic, I don't really understand it either. Insomuch as many seem to view him as something more than just a man.

Actually, I think the KKK is pretty anti-Catholic already.

Catholics consider the Pope God's Word on Earth. Outside of the Clergy he is a considered the greatest person on earth among Catholics, if you agree with him or not. Inside the Clergy they tend not to care what the Pope says.
Actually, I think the KKK is pretty anti-Catholic already.
Quite. They're the decendants of those Protestants who fled religious persectution just so they can kill Catholics and black people.
About the pope dying. I really didn't like the man at all. He was the pope, so bloody what. He didn't do a single thing I agreed with(except forgiving his would-be-assasinator), and was detrimental to the world as a whole. He reinstated the Catholic ban of contraceptives, pushed the hatred of gays, attacked the involvement of women, and assaulted liberal liberation groups in South America(a place that really needed them with the numerous dictatorships in the area).

How about YOU get over it. If your father, mother, or children touch hundreds of millions of people world wide, account for a large help in taking down communism, and single handedly setting the example for religious togetherness.........then you will see mass mourning coupled with 24/7 news.
Just because he is getting a lot of attention does not make him any more important than your family members. He was just widely loved and known by many people. Nothing to be jealous of.

I have heard similar suggestions....namely because of the overwhelming growth in religion (mainly in Catholicism) in Africa.

Not going to happen. Those who try and predict are always wrong. We'll find out when the Church announces it, until then we wont even have a decent guess.

Well afterall, he did say considering and maybe. Given, conclave will not even start for 2 weeks at the very least, but I would predict we will start to hear the rumor mill start to turn after the 6 day mourning is over.
I would not like to be the man who has to step into the shoes of Pope John Paul II.

They should elect a female mexican ex-jew as the Pope.
Who cares who the Pope is - he'll be old. thats for sure. He won't do much, and everybody will kiss his holy boots - just like the last guy.

The last guy didnt do much? Ha!!!! He only helped end communism, and united a world of varying believers. Yeah, he totally laid down on the job.

He potentially had a hand in motivating some people that helped end communism. Communism would have ended just the same with or without John Paul. Lets not overstate his involvement.
Remember - he was the pope - it's easy to do great things when you are the pope. It's probably not that hard to do really really great things. Opening your mouth is not that hard a task. It's not like he had to fight or launch a crusade or put much on the line.

DrewM sez: " ... He potentially had a hand in motivating some people that helped end communism. Communism would have ended just the same with or without John Paul. Lets not overstate his involvement. ..."
In his own way, he did as much to end communism as anyone else in that battle. In fact, according to one old commie, ...(the) collapse of the Iron Curtain would have been impossible without John Paul II. That same old commie said Sunday that John Paul II's (http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/04/03/pope.gorbachev/index.html) "devotion to his followers is a remarkable example to all of us."
Is that an overstatement?
DrewM

Interesting but sentimental article.
I agree he had a hand in it - but by motivation of people on the ground, not by fireside chats with leaders. Since when do world leaders take any notice of the pope? The idea is a bit far fetched and interesting but only as sentimental retrospect.
Communism would have fell regardless. The process was already in place before JP II said anything on the subject.
Saw CNN pole results that stated a high percentage of people wanted a more liberal pope and women in church positions.
