How much would you be wanting to spend?

For laptops I would definitely recommend Dell. I did a little bit of research and here are the specs:

• 2-GHz Pentium M 755 processor
• 14.1-inch screen
• 6.4 pounds
• 80GB hard drive
• DVD+RW drive
• Price: $2125

It depends on what you intend to use the laptop for, and how much you are willing to spend (as per Borg's post).

Gaming, CAD, word processing, internet, etc.?

I plan on using it for my internet business and will plan on spending around 1000 plus for a good one and maybe play a game or too :D I don't know much about laptops so I was just wanting some insight on what to get.

My laptop is from Dell, its got ---

17" wide screen
Pentium 4 (m), 2.0ghz
512megs
Nvidia Geforce 4 4200 Go
DVD/CD rewriter
40 gig drive
SigmaTel C-Major Audio card
Infra Red port,
Firewire port,
USB 2 ports x2
and the usual PCI expansion slot

This cost me about £1800 which i guess is about 2600$ or something. But like i got this probably about 7 or 8 months ago now so you can better stuff.

Upgrading a laptop can be a total bitch though so if ya not going to be moving all that much id go with the desktop, loads loads more power for the money.

If ya interested, I can run Doom 3 with no hiccups at a relatively low res. which isnt half bad for a laptop.

gmeyer,

You might want to check out the Sony Vaio's on www.newegg.com.

They have some pretty nice systems for around $1300-$1400.

Like Loki said, They are difficult to upgrade and you get much less performance "bang" for your buck compared to a desktop system.

I use an older Dell PIII as my laptop for travel, and it serves me fine (it's not much of a gaming system though...LOL).

If you don't have to be mobile all the time, I would recommend a nice desktop for around $1000, and buy a reconditioned or used laptop for $500 +/- for your mobile needs. (I bought my laptop on Ebay for less than $300.)
