The suspense has finally ended. Brett Favre has told Mike Sherman that he will play next year, and possibly more depending on his health. This is good news for the Packers, and could aid in the rebuilding process. Each year he plays now helps the salary cap situation when he finally does retire because of his signing bonus.
Also the Packers released safety Darren Sharper today. They are clearly dumping older and more expensive players with an eye toward the future. It should be interesting to see what they do in the later stages of free agency, and possibly with trades. The draft will also be extremely interesting. They have many holes to fill right now.

And there was much rejoicing . . .

Much rejoicing and a little trepidation. It would not be pleasant to watch an aging quarterback injured playing behind a cobbled together offensive line. The loss of Rivera and Wahle will have to be addressed.

Do the Packers have a good backup plan to Favre? Last time I checked (which, admittedly, was rather long ago), Favre's backup was Pederson. Are the Packers looking to draft a QB this year?

No they don't, which is a little disturbing. Nall, who was Favre's backup after Pederson got hurt showed some flashes that he might be decent, but who knows. Sounds like Pederson isn't coming back next year. And apparently this year isn't a good one for QBs. Sigh.
What's really amazing when you think about it is how many really good backup QBs the Packers had when Favre was younger (Brunnell, Brooks, Hasselbeck, Warner (actually, he didn't even make the team)) and now that he's older, they got squat.

You forgot Ty Detmer in your list of great backups. I remember the superbowl team when the three quarterbacks were Favre, Detmer, and Brunell. That was the lineup Kurt Warner couldn't break into.
Right now the probable backups are Nall and the quarterback we got from New Orleans in the trade last year. I don't see them getting another quarterback in the draft this year, and salary cap considerations will make it unlikely that they can sign a free agent.

No I didn't. :) OK, he was actually a really good backup, but he never went on to perform very well as the main guy anywhere else.

He started for Philadelphia for several years. They never really made it deep into the playoffs then, but he did become their starter.
