I heard an interesting interview on the radio today. It was with a representative of the both/and project, which is a project that is trying to heal the either/or thinking in our political process today. They have a web site.

The basic point was that we need to find a way to stop trying to solve problems by deciding that either one side is right or the other side is right. We need to find out what one side and the other side agree on. We need to take more time to try to understand why each side feels the way they do.

I found myself agreeing wholeheartedly with this view. I am curious what others might think of this.

thats a really good idea. the dgmatic people on every side of the issues keep us from finding practical solutions to problems.

This is the best kind of problem solving around. We are supposed to teach our kids this type of thing, when they are in a heated argument with either a sibling or friend, yet we continue to argue / debate / bitch / moan at each other as adults.

It's much simpler to think of things in and either/or fashion, which is why it's so prevalent. This way of thinking is especially dangerous in politics and world affairs because the stakes are so high. If people can't see the complexities of problems then they'll never be able to solve them.

Thanks Borg, I was a little confused at that myself. :) Thankfully, Vile, I can usually interpret the sarcasm on this site. (Or maybe it wasn't sarcasm??!)
