You need to be more specific. What file, how do you know it's corrupted, what you have done so far.

I'd run a Standard scan on Scandisk and check "Automatically fix errors." If that fails, well, come back with more details.

Many thanks for your reply the corrupt file is called C:\$Mft. I loaded the EX service pack update and Zone alarm and after that the windows message cam up as "courrypt file C:\Mft". I was unable to run defrag and scan disk because the message then appeared as I tried which read run chkdsk first. I did and still no luck. This file seems to have logged me out of a number of things. I could not restore to a previous state using restore programme. I also seem to not be able to back up my data to totally restore machine. Don't know if above any use to you for ideas but I have none as not that conversant with the intricacies of computer workings.

Many thanks

Tony

Have you tried directly deleting the file?

Go to "My Computer", double click the C: drive, right click the file in question, and click delete.

If that fails, then go to Start>Accesories>MS-DOS Prompt or Command Prompt. When you get the prompt, type "cd C:\" w/o the quotes. Then, you need the file's extension. Type "dir/w". Somewhere in what appeared, you should see your mft and next to it three letters. Type "mft.xyz" w/o the quotes, where xyz is the three letters next to it in the directory.

Problem not solved? Do a web search. Chances are someone else has this problem too. If not, write to a PC magazine and explain your problem. They might be able to do more than I did. Tell them everything that you did and your OS.
