Well actually I do not know if the ending is near for WinMX.
If you don't know what WinMX is, it is a p2p software program where you can share and download music movies pictures and anything else.
Think of it as a Kazaa without the dangers of the FBI or RIAA there breathing down your back waiting for you to click the *download* button. It's pretty cool and I've used it since I was like 11. Mainly because of the awesome chat room though.
Recently, it has been acting weird. A huge number of fake files have been added. To connect to download a file WinMX goes through 5 stages:
Waiting For Network Reply
Waiting For Incoming Connection
Connecting to Remote User
Connected, Nogitating
Downloading
When you try to download a file and it turns out to be fake, MX doesn't even pass "waiting for network reply". It just times out. Usually when you search for a song you get like oh say 200 files of that song available for download. Now, with the fake files, you get like 6000!
Recently I was in a chat room and there was this girl that like knew everything about it. He had examples and claims on the fake files. Here are some:
<sodado14511> ----- 1 example : Ive found multiple users with 200+ copies of the same file in their lists
This is actually true. Most files when are available for download say 1 + x available. This means that 1 or any other number there are the number of people that will let you download and x stands for the number that will make u wait in line. With the fake files, there are usually like 30 people that are available to let u download...it's crazy...
<sodado14511> -------- 2 example: I accidently attempted to dl a music file Id never heard of the musician, when suddenly over 200 users jumped into the queue
I've noticed this too...A song you regularly get with like 20 search results you get 100...
<sodado14511> ------- Example 3: Fake? Looks intentional to me,, Try a search for "C:\Nelly" then look at the file path,
I tried this and it frightened me. I got like 5 of the same songs with the same user that will let you download them. I just gasped...
sodado14511> ------- Example 4: multiple examples of that search revealed users with pathways revealing multiple directories with a small number of diferent files
and finally
sodado14511> -------- example 5: the multiple directories were not Ghosts they were numbered 0 - 3309 "c:\my shared folder\3309\nelly - id die for you"
Am I over reacting? Should I just shrugg this off? ???
