"When Katherine Hegler first tried college after leaving the Army, her grades were so bad that she ended up on academic probation. She left school and re-enlisted.

When she returned to school more recently, she had the help of Veterans Upward Bound, a decades-old federally funded program that helps vets transition from military to college life. Hegler, of Rogers Park, credits the program with helping her adjust to life outside the military and better prepare for attending Northeastern Illinois University, where she's earning nearly all A's.

And Hegler, 45, hopes to keep learning, someday earning a doctorate in theology.

But the program for vets, part of a national initiative that also serves low-income high school students, might soon be on the chopping block, officials told the Chicago Sun-Times. Advocates say they've been told by Bush administration officials that the president's forthcoming budget proposal will ax funding (http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-vetaid07.html) for Upward Bound and another similar effort, Talent Search."

"In order to be eligible for participation in a VUB (http://www.veteransupwardbound.org/vetub.html) program an individual must be a low-income an/or first-generation college (meaning that neither of your parents have a four-year college degree) veteran, having served at least 180 days of active federal service, and have a discharge that is OTHER than dishonorable."

"The Upward Bound program promotes higher learning to students during a crucial time in their lives: high school. Another of the Trio programs, Educational Talent Search, begins much younger than that. Teresa Ward, Director, said it is important to begin talking about postsecondary education options to middle school students so the idea becomes a real possibility to them.

She said that in addition to serving low income and first generation students, the program works with any under served group: minorities, women or the disabled. (http://www.wku.edu/echo/archive/pre2002Aug/2001/march/trios.html)"

How are women underserved in terms of postsecondary education?

ahhh...I thought they supported the troops by giving them a free chance to catch some bullets. Or maybe test a few biological agents on them. Or maybe test the effects of a IED on an unarmored hummer. Or you know turn them into killing obsessed psychopaths then leaving them to rot as half-sane alcoholics.

low income? when I got out of the army I was 21 years old and had no job, no home and no prospects. Neither of my parents have a 4 year degree either. I think that qualifys for low income, of course I was white so why bother? I just had to make it on my own.

Actually he's right, there are more women in college than men in the U.S.

The Bush-admin LOVES people, like you; you do what your told, and never ask any questions........especially when someone's rippin'-off your tax-dollars, and givin' them to people who have plenty!

I guess too many women (in "conservatives"-eyes), are realizing there are minimal benefits to being babysat by a husband.
