I'm starting this thread for you Lokidevil.
Should smoking be taken away, made illegal? If we do make it illegal what will be next beer, wine, etc....?
What other unsafe things should be made illegal? junk food, bikes, certain cars, power tools, motorcycles, jetski, powerboats, rock climbing, certain cosmetics, planes, trians, knifes, guns, baseball bats, and whatever else anyone can think of.

What and remove the ability for those people to expereince the death of a love one through lung cancer? Nah why bother they love it, you can see it in their eyes.
Why make guns illegal? I mean shit id hate to see people stop shooting each other cause fuck me that would be terrible.
Your point is and lets make this clear to avoid confusion. Should we remove everyones ability to self harm through whatever medium they choose.
Well lets go down your list shall we,
Smoking - Is damaging for your body from the word go, Its basically the equilvent of those people that cut themselves for the adrenaline rush. They get a buzz from it but it is doing the body serious harm.
JunkFood - Yeh eventually i dont think this will exist, through clever means they will create food that is healthy whilst still retaining the tastes of whatever it is you find nice.
Bikes - You could fall off but actually protect yourself and be sensible youll be fine.
ok i got bored and couldnt be bothered with the whole list.
I believe youll agree with this, Its Free choice that is both the blessing and the curse of the Human Race. It will both set us free and hold us back and in the end. FreeChoice will destroy us.
Hell its not even Freechoice really, its just Choice.
I really dont like smoking, thats clear, and i dont like it because it harms you from the word go and aside from the placebo relaxtion effect, it doesnt do anything else.
I guess in the end ill have to let them do what they want to do. I still have the right to stop people smoking in my car, or house etc so aside from Pubs, its all good.
Do you smoke?

Keep it all legal...and the consequences for the choice high...very, very, high.
And keep in the forefront of our minds... our freedom to choose stops right where others begin.

Soooo what is your answer legal or not legal?
Why make guns illegal? I mean shit id hate to see people stop shooting each other cause fuck me that would be terrible.
that was a stupid thing to type, my family has had guns for many years and there has been no deaths caused by them......... Infact I know 100s of folks that have guns in my area that don't even get them out unless it's time to hunt or target shoot. Actually gun shooting at a target range can make for a fun day. try it some time if you can ever get over the one track mind setting you have.

this seems to be the way society is going, self save laws because people for some reason don't want to take responsibility for their actions. The label on smoking material tells people it could be dangerous. Just like folks should know driving a car can be dangerous. More people die from vehicle accidents then smoking so maybe we should have laws that say no more driving to the mall, no going to the club, no driving to a friends house. The only time you can drive is for food, work, cloths.
Smoking - Is damaging for your body from the word go, Its basically the equilvent of those people that cut themselves for the adrenaline rush. They get a buzz from it but it is doing the body serious harm.
so you say make it illegal? what if someone likes to smoke a cigar once a year for new years, kind of like social drinking?
JunkFood - Yeh eventually i dont think this will exist, through clever means they will create food that is healthy whilst still retaining the tastes of whatever it is you find nice.
so add more additives to our food intake, thought you were against cancer causing crap? What is the problem with a bag of chips every once in awhile as long as you don't become a fat slob?
Bikes - You could fall off but actually protect yourself and be sensible youll be fine.
tell that line to all those that die every year from bike crashes.
I believe youll agree with this, Its Free choice that is both the blessing and the curse of the Human Race. It will both set us free and hold us back and in the end. FreeChoice will destroy us.
I do agree it can be a blessing or a curse. I have to through this in Free choice has not destroyed us yet infact I would say the population just keeps getting bigger
I really dont like smoking, thats clear, and i dont like it because it harms you from the word go and aside from the placebo relaxtion effect, it doesnt do anything else.
I do agree I don't care for smoking allthough at one time long ago I did enjoy the smell and taste of a cigar. never did give me a relaxing effect.
I guess in the end ill have to let them do what they want to do. I still have the right to stop people smoking in my car, or house etc so aside from Pubs, its all good.
I believe you should have the right to do what you want in/on your property and I don't think smoking should be allowed in public places that everyones tax money goes to support, schools, town/city buildings, etc.... But if a pub owner owns his building it should be his choice what goes on legally, in my state it is not.
Do you smoke?
NO as I said above I use to smoke the occasional cigar, quit that along time ago. I never smoked heavy but have friends that do{with no health problems} They are respectfull around me and don't light up in my home. Just the same if they want to light up in their house that is their business I can step outside or just leave.

If people want to smoke, let 'em. But they should also have to deal with any consequences that might bring - such as higher life insurance premiums (which they already have to deal with), higher health insurance premiums, etc.

Why is the Pub owner allowed to dictact if people smoke or not, and the Owner of his company not?
Afterall the Pub owner is stopping people from smoking in their Free time which your massively against.

100th time here it goes again the company owner can do as he pleases on his property or during the working hrs. same as the pub owner, NEITHER HAVE THE POWER TO DICTATE WHAT HAPPENS ON PERSONAL TIME. Are you confused as to what working and non-working mean?
Afterall the Pub owner is stopping people from smoking in their Free time which your massively against.
What the F are you talking about, when, where, how, did I ever say the pub owner stopped anybody from doing anything on their free time?
Lets try this again you own a business you can dictate{legally} what happens during busines hrs, and what happens on business property.
I own a pub I can dictate{legally} what happens behind my doors and on my property.
HERE IS THE BIG ONE THAT YOU SEEM TO KEEP MISSING NEITHER OF US HAVE NOR SHOULD HAVE THE POWER TO DICTATE WHAT PEOPLE DO ON THEIR PRIVATE TIME.

The people whom are smoking in the pub would be on their private time?? unless they consider having a beer work?
Thus the barkeep whom stops them smoking, is therefore stopping them smoking on their private time.

I do agree with this just as I would not feel sorry for a stunt man that breaks his back, his choice his problem. Did you ever watch the Jack a** show those kids are going to end up with some problems later in life, I say to bad you made your bed now ly in it.
I would like to see more education in schools about these problems{smoking, drinking, etc...} The only problem is the way some want to shove things down kids throats. It would be better to see more education and less personal opinion. From what I have seen the more adults try to force an opinion the more kids tend to rebel.

Well by this last post I can see you are not being serious either that or your trying to catch me off guard.
The pub is private property just like the company just like your house. If the owner of the pub doesn't want smoking then there will be none if he wants it then it will be. The owner of the pub can not make you smoke or eat chips but he can allow these things to go on in his establishment. He also can not make you watch a certain TV show at your house.
Do you want to stop smoking?

Are the people that smoke AWARE that it'll eventually murder years of their life? Or do they just not care? *puff* (Actually I don't smoke...and I don't plan to...)

Go to your doctor, there are plans to stop smoking...of course at the beginning you might be prescribed some substitutes to cope.
Other people stop cold turkey....
Anyhooo, if smoking should be ilegal, why not alcohol? it is also addicted and caused serious health and social problems.
My opinion, everybody should have good information about all drugs (legal and ilegal ones) and then decide by themselves what to do with their lives and take the consecuences.

Loki I new what you ment. It would be hard to pass a law because tobacco is big money, but what about education. Smoking when I was young was the in thing alot of kids did it. Through the years I can see this is starting to change how long will it take to stop it all together??? How many kids still smoke because they think it's kool?
Lokideviluk

My sister is 18 and smokes, I dont really want to see her get cancer. Im not niave enough to assume i can stop it in anyway globally.
Loads of kids still smoke cause its cool, Im pretty sure making smoking illegal would reduce that number greatly though. The cigreatte companys would have to go all illegal and the price for getting them would be silly money so no one would bother.
It would mean that Rizla would have to justify their existance as a company and i cant imagine "smoking pot" would hang well in the courts.
Lots and lots of people who work for the cigarette companys would lose their jobs etc
So theres pro's and con's but since its taxable it wont be going anywhere fast.

Loki, do you think your sister would have smoked if there were a better education program about tobacco?
Tobacco is a big money maker and the politicians like it the way it is right now. If it were made illegal then congress would have to take a cut in pay :) The big money makers in this country are gas, alcohol, and tobacco. There are alot of folks around me that go to indian res. so they don't have to pay the tax, it knocks the price of tobacco way down. Maybe the problem is our leaders worrying more about lining their pockets instead of worrying about a healthier society.

Yep, nothing we can do though. Well im moving out of this country because of that, but i cant change things.
and nope, her school had a policy but at the time it was "cool" to smoke and no goverment warning or information on dying is going to stop them

I would say the same is true for all of my friends, way back when you were kool if you smoked. I'm sure alot of them wish they had the strength just to say no, if not for the health issue's atleast for the amount of money wasted over the years. It's funny how society works people will do anything to fit in even if they know it is bad for them. Better to fit in then to live a long happy healthy life.

As much as I would love for it to be made illegal (so I won't smoke...lol) it just isn't going to happen I don't think. =/

maybe if we knew as much (about how harmful alcohol and tobacco are) then as we know now, both would probably be as illegal as cocaine and marijuana are. anyone else agree??
mad dog
02-11-2005, 07:21 AM
Jenny; you may be right. There is nothing wrong with a social drink or maybe even the once in a blue moon cigar. The problem comes when things are over done. cocaine is still worse then alcohol or tobacco even a little of that crap goes to far.
Swede, you are correct it is to much of a money maker to be going anywhere anytime soon.

They did make alcohol illegal, it didn't work. Making anything illegal in order to protect people from it does not work. It merely creates an underground market.

If you're going to outlaw alchohol and tobacco, than you also must do the same with caffeine. I get a headache if I don't get enough caffeine everyday.
As far as smoking...
I smoke, it's digusting yes... but it's my choice. If I get cancer someday from cigarettes (or any other recreational drug of my choice) than it's my fault. I know the dangers of smoking and I still continue to do so.

Of course they should NOT ban smoking.
Think about it - there would be a lot of pissed off people ready to kick some ass out there!
Things are bad enough as it is!!
Don't need anyone going postal because they couldn't have their damn nicotine.
Smoking has been around since the beginning of time!!
Matter of fact legalize the weed too!!

People should be allowed to smoke, but health insurance companies should be allowed to deny coverage to people that do smoke. That would lower health costs for those of us that are smart enough not to smoke and skrew those who are stupid enough to smoke.
You want to give yourself costly health problems? Do it on your own dime.

Fair enough.
And now, I eat healthy and also exercise.
Should the overweight people pay more than me? and those who are genetically predisposed to have some kind of illness? we can assure they would cost more money to the insurance companies.

Yes "obese" people should pay more than you because it is a "chosen lifestyle". People who skydive pay higher insurance because it is a high risk sport which they have "chosen" to indulge in.
Those who are genetically predisposed to an illness should not since that is not a chosen behaviour.
