OK, if you read other forums, then you know that I've posted a couple polls, but here's another: your favorite book type. Just so you know, my great-grandfather was an author, and I just happen to love books.

I like to read a lot of different things. I probably read more science fiction/fantasy than anything else. But I also like mystery books and general fiction. I'd probably read just about anything really. :)

I really like travel writings. You know those written by Paul Theroux or Bill Bryson or William Least Heat-Moon. It's like you are taking a trip with a really resourceful and interesting companion. You should have a category for travel writings. :D

I also enjoy reading history and books from the sociology or cultural studies section in bookstores, these are non-fictions. For fictions, for a while now I've been reading exclusively modern and contemporary classics, like kerouac, DeLillo, Wolfe, Murakami... Stayed away from story-oriented mass fictions because every time after reading one of those I felt like I could have used my time doing better things. Also stayed away from older classics because I feel a lot of time and research are needed in order to prepare myself to fully understand and appreciate them. For example Joyce (okay, fine, he's modern already, but an exception) is just not worth reading if you can't catch all the allusions and references he put in every sentence.

Also I read in Mandarin Chinese 20% of the time.

Now Borg what's with the new avatar again?

Non-fiction for me, especially historical type stuff. The truth is often stranger than fiction anyway.

I really enjoy non fiction, but sometimes it can be a little depressing. So some brain candy in the area of sci fi or general fiction can be a welcome change.

I do not like mysteries.

I really love ancient historical fiction or non fiction.

Jean M. Auel (Clan of The Cave Bear series)

and Kathleen and Micheal Gear have many awesome North American Historical series........

I will try anything though, don't just stick to one genre, I want to open my mind as much as possible......

Anne Rice, Stephen King, John Saul, Dean Koontz...all provide a wonderful escape from this reality when needed.

However i do enjoy John Grisham, Tom Clancy, Sir Arthur Conon Doyle and the like just as much i think.

Tough to pick a "favorite" genre. I like non-fiction like Carl Sagans books, historical stuff, and I like to read trash sometimes just for entertainment like Clive Cussler, Tom Clancy etc. I've read several Dean Koontz's books and they are generally ok, allthough there's been a few stinkers. I refuse to read any more Stephen King after reading "The Tommyknockers". Terrible ending. Michael Chrichton is good...alas I ramble...

I too have enjoyed the entire Clan of the Cave Bear series. I'm not familiar with Kathleen and Michael Gear's books. Are they similar to Clan of the Cave Bear?

I enjoy reading alternate histories, horror, sci-fi, just about anything. My favorite authors are Jean Auel, Michael Crichton, and Anne Rice. I've read so many other books but other authors as well.
