to truly appreciate the depth of the universe, is it necessary to have a basic understanding of GOD?

First of all what is your definition of "depth of the universe"?
And when you speak of appreciation, do you mean from a philosophical perspective or a scientific perspective, or a spiritual perspective?
Cause without any borders the answer would have to be an unequivocal .......... no!

Could you tell us of this understanding?

The Universe IS God. Call it what you want but the Universe has a supreme Will.

Depends if you believe in God. If you do, then definitely Yes. If not, then why bother searching for something which isn't there.

To understand God is to understand Infinity itself which is something that is impossible to achieve. God is Infinite. Unlike knowledge, God has no limit of what he is or how he exist, so there is no way possible that we as mere mortals can ever hope to even remotely understand, even the most basic concepts of God in any shape, way, form, or fashion .
Contrary to the belief of both scientist and many theologist, the human mind is limited to what can and cannot be achieved. Gods ability and existance is far beyond anything that we as mere human beings will ever be able to comprehend.
To make this clearer, I'll relay to you a short story I was once told:
Once there was a man who was called upon by God himself. As the man heard the voice of God, he grew very afraid and hid amongst the rocks. God told him in a very calm voice:
"Come on out from behind the rocks, I won't hurt you".
As the man slowly came out, he asked "Who are you"? God answered:
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end
I am everything that ever was,
everything that is,
and all that shall ever be
There are none before me
There are none after me
I am the first
I am the last
I am the creator of all existance
The man then asked "What shall I call you, what is your name?
God answered: I am a God of No Name
But yet I have Many Names
Some call me Jehovah
Some call me Buddah
Some call me Allah
Some call me Akrah
There are countless others who throughout time have identified me by infinite titles
each one worships me each in their own way
I am not just one God, I am God of ALL Gods
I am Alpha and Omega
The beginning and the end
I am all that ever was,
All that is
and all that shall ever be
I am the first and the last
the beginning and the end.
The man asked: How do I worship you? What must I do?
God answered: Do not worship me by acts or deeds but worship me both from the heart, with all your heart, for the heart.. is where my home is.
I would like to recommend an very good book named "Embraced by the Light" by Betty J Edie. that I think you would really enjoy reading. This is a book about a woman who after contracting pnumonia, was declared clinically dead for over four hours and experienced an after life experience of what we can all expect when we die. Check it out :)

You cant possible know that information. I hate to break it to you, but there is no way for you to speak about such things with abslute conviction since there is no way you can factually explain them.
It seems its becomming more common for christian folk to speak for God like they were pals sharing accomadation or something.

back to metaphysics:
The Universe is of a definite size. That size is more vast than we can imagine, and yet more miniscule than we can imagine. I believe that there is a universe in every elementary particle (not a different universe but our exact universe. Not a copy of our Universe...)
So you are smaller than a superstring and larger than the whole Universe SIMULTANEOUSLY!!

I am sorry to say, but that's crazy talk, Ed. You just contradicted all religion and scientific bases without giving any support for your argument.
But I do agree with Dunkirk in that God is infinite, so nobody can know Him. However, I disagree, because Christian God (i.e. Jesus) clearly says that there is no other path to salvation save through Him. None! That means there cannot be God like Dunkirk described, because then He would be a liar. I suppose we could imagine a god who is a liar, but that's beyond the point.

There is no god, therfore you can understand the universe without understanding that fake being. Plain and simple. :)

Because, belief without proof in either leaves room to be wrong.
Continued search for evidence may produce the personal answer.

I dissagree. I believe in God and I am absolutely sure that I am right. There is not mistake, no room to be wrong.

I also believe in God, and if I told you that I get a glimpse of him in the mirror each day you would think me a lunatic.
For you see, I believe each of us to be Gods in our own right.
No mysterious being upon a throne in a city of golden streets.
But individuals capable of so much more than realized. The energy form within us is forever.

The energy withing us if from God. Everything around us was created by God, and therefore, is a glimpse of God. Any science you take gives you a view into God, a limit view, but interesting nonetheless.
God did create us in His own image, so in a sense we are gods, but the only power we have is derived from Him who is the Power. Alone we are nothing, with God we are everything.

With a god, you are crippled. You no longer have the strength in yourself to rise to meet challenges - you take on a "victim" mentality that is unhealthy and leads to self destruction.

You can't be more wrong. With God I can take on anything. It's the unlimited power that is being with God, that allows me to do nothing when others are against me. God will judge them, who am I to do that? What can they do? What can they do when I have God on my side? They can speak evil, beat me, rape, torture,...kill. That's all. Are you afraid of those things? I am not, because I have God.
If you are refering to life problems, then you are wrong again. I know that God will not do everything for me, but rather expects me to do many things for myself. I can and I will do the things that I need to do and God will aid me.

That is so blatantly "generalized" that it is pathetic. You could take that statement and apply it to all most any group of people and it will almost "aways" apply to a small fragment within said group.
The national disease is to be crippled or victimized and sue or blame another.
