What does W.A.S.P. stand for? I know that it is some kind of government agency or organization that supposedly "keeps the order" within both the United States and the world, but I have absolutely no idea what these letters stand for.

Anybody here know?

It's not a Govt. organization...it stands for White Anglo-Saxon Protestant...

There was an article in GQ magazine where it pictured a women in a beautiful long yellow garden dress and the caption was

"An all american WASP on a Carly Simmons high"

Would that still have the same meaning

I would assume so...it's usually used somewhat disparagingly.

If they aren't part of the Govt, then who are these Guys?

Reason I ask, is because I can remember reading something about them a long time ago having something to do with the overthrow of the old kingdoms of Hawaii. I'm very sure that this info I read was extremely misleading which is why I came here for correction.

Do these guys even exist or are they something that someone made up?

Correction. Only persons of English, or "Saxon", descent qualify.

Well, that's pretty much any white person except for pure-blooded Spaniards or Italians.

Most people are, if only a little. I'm part Scottish, part Irish...

Well that's definately Saxon blood. If you're a protestant, then you're a WASP.

The saxon part is Germanic - i.e. most of northern Europe.

Well, do you consider Irish Saxon blood?.... I always thought Irish have more Celtic blood than Saxon or Anglo-Saxon...did you know that the Irish and the Spaniards have a lot of common ancestors? Celtic people expanded over most of Europe.

Lionel, Saxons are not Germanic... the " germanic" tribes together with the Francos, Saxons, Anglos, Normands, Goths...came from (nowadays) central Russia.

Actually, both of you were right, believe it or not. According to Dictionary.com, Saxon is defined as:

1. A member of a West Germanic tribal group that inhabited northern Germany and invaded Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries A.D. with the Angles and Jutes.
2. A person of English or Lowland Scots birth or descent as distinguished from one of Irish, Welsh, or Highland Scots birth or descent.
3. A native or inhabitant of Saxony.
4. The West Germanic language of any of the ancient Saxon peoples.
5. The Germanic element of English as distinguished from the French and Latin elements.

I'm a major at B.C in Physcology and Sociology, and I focus my studies amoung the upper classes of society... perhaps this could help and debates or questions:

W.A.S.P.
(White Anglo-Saxon Protestant)

Criteria: +Must be caucasion.
+Must be christian-- specifically protestant (methodist, congregationalist, presbyterian etc.)
+Must be predominatly from Southern Great Britian where the Saxons (Germanic) invaded and influenced the culture during the dark / mideval ages.

This term WASP is generally applied to members of our society who live within the NorthEastern portion of the United States. (Largely New England, but also portions of Long Island, New York etc).

WASPs are typified as being amoung the upper-middle and upper classes of society, and gain most of their capital through family hertigage and their prof. career income.

"True" WASPs have been in america before we were a country, most of these "true" WASP families have been here for 10 or more generations.

WASPs are also known for being conservative, snobby, and overly-sheltered/ poor at physcial labor. We are also known for being social-addicts, AWFUL at making food (half-frozen shepards pie, blood pudding, you get the idea) and lovers of alcohol-- specifically martinis. Hence this little joke:

How many WASPs does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
-Two, one to make the martinis while the other calls the electrician.

Finally, WASPs are known for being absolutely terrible at sex and the men are known for being not-so-well endowed (a stereotype that has really screwed me over).

Hope this clears everthing up!
